Nigerian Army Warns ‘Subversive Elements, Trouble Makers’, Reassures Commitment to Defend Nigeria’s Democracy
The Nigerian Army on Wednesday evening warned those it termed ‘subversive elements and trouble makers’ to desist from such acts as it ” remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost”.
In a statement issued by the Colonel Sagir Musa, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the Army reassured “law abiding citizens that it is highly committed to the sustenance of peace, security and defence of democracy in Nigeria”.
“As a responsible and law abiding organisation, the NA reaffirms its unalloyed loyalty and commitment to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari and the Constitution of the Country.

“The NA hereby warns all subversive elements and trouble makers to desist from such acts as it remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost. The NA is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively. All officers and men are directed never to be distracted by anti democratic forces and agents of disunity”.
The terse statement from the Army is likely to be its response to the festering nationwide protests against the now disbanded Nigeria Police tactical unit called ‘Special Anti Robbery Squad’, aka, SARS, which is taking a worrying dimension. Earlier on Wednesday, both pro and anti-SARS protesters clashed in Abuja and Lagos, a development that sent many protesters and onlookers scampering for safety.
It is feared that such clashes and further protests are potent recipe for chaos and anarchy in the country. The protest which has been ongoing for the past eight days has continued despite the dissolution of the much hated police unit by the police authorities and the assurance of President Buhari to look into the concerns raised by the protesting youths.
