The Charisma of Gov Umahi and Echoes of Cessation of Hostilities in Communities Affected by Land Disputes

By Orji Uchenna Orji Francis

The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi FNSE FNATE has again demonstrated that he is a charismatic leader whose accomplishments in peace and security are legendary in the history of Ebonyi State.

Ebonyi State is an agrarian state with farmers some of whom engage in subsistent agriculture because of limited land mass and land tenure system in practice in the state.

Dispute as to ownership of land between individuals or communities within the state and those outside the state often trigger clashes and needless crises. This has been part of the cultural history of homogenous and heterogeneous communities in parts of Ebonyi State.

However, the administration of His Excellency Engr Chief David Nweze Umahi FNSE FNATE, Governor of Ebonyi State has made tremendous efforts in bringing lasting peace to the war-torn areas and in ensuring cessation of hostilities in the communities that currently suffer renewed conflicts.

His efforts in resolving the perennial Ezza/Ezillo crisis and returning the two communities to the part of peace, his proactive interventions in inter-state boundary disputes that nearly engulfed communities bounding with Enugu, Abia,Cross River and Benue states and his prompt halting of sudden hostilities between some communities in the state over land ownership, are among the echoes of charisma that characterize his leadership credentials.

Today, God has used a servant leader, Engr Umahi to put a stop to the crisis at Effuim/Ezza Effium, Isinkwo and Abaomege, Enyibichiri and Enyigba communities. This however, did not come with ease. It was a product of instensive meetings, persuasions, admonitions, and dispassionate enforcement of law and order by some agencies.

What is left to cement this peace is for the stakeholders, the youths and women to build a spirit of forgiveness, love, patience and tolerance to one another. We must leave in peace. Let’s remember that war is nobody’s friend. It comes with woes and peril. It comes with poverty, death, hunger, frustration, denial, hopelessness and and complete destruction of homes.
