The Maiden Retreat of Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) kicked off in Abuja on Saturday, November 13, 2021 with a call by the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj Gen Samuel Adebayo, for participants to use the opportunity to identify new lessons and challenges, and discuss modalities of overcoming various security challenges assailing the country.

The Defence Intelligence Chief noted that the retreat was “necessitated by the observation that since the inception of the Agency, no platform has been created for institutional reflection on its activities with a view to measuring the attainment of its core mandate”.

According to him, given the multiple internal security challenges bedeviling the country, the need to “put together a self examination mechanism, in line with global best practices to ensure optimal performance evaluation has become necessary”.

This Retreat will undoubtedly serve as an avenue to identify new lessons and challenges, discuss modalities of overcoming such challenges and re-strategize for the future. Accordingly, the topic “Contemporary Threat Assessment and National Development: The Role of DIA in the Nigerian Intelligence Architecture”, was considered for the lecture and discussion”.

Gen Adebayo assured that seasoned senior officers and top-notch intelligence experts are billed to deliver lectures at the retreat which will be followed by interactive sessions. According to him, “At the end of the day, we would have gained significant insights on how to reposition the Agency towards a more solid pedestal, in addressing the myriad security challenges bedeviling our dear country and to also achieve sustainable national security growth. The need for a continuous reappraisal of our strategies, operational tactics and methods of intelligence gathering in order to efficiently deal with our security challenges is therefore paramount. This forum will no doubt provide the opportunity to tap from the vast experience of the former Chiefs of Defence Intelligence and past directors of the agency”.

The Intelligence Chief used the opportunity to appreciate the Federal Government, the Ministry of Defence and Defence Headquarters for the financial and institutional support the Agency is receiving from them. He said the only way the DIA can reciprocate this gesture is for the Agency to “remain alive to its duties and be at the forefront of the government effort to proactively identify and deal with emerging threats that portend grave danger to our dear nation”.

The DIA Maiden Retreat which is holding at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, has top military and intelligence officers in attendance.
