One of the passengers in the ill-fated Kaduna-bound train has narrated their ordeal and how the prompt arrival of troops of the Nigerian Army led by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj Gen Kabir Mukthar, saved the situation from what would have been a total disaster.

According to the man who chose to not be named, the train took off smoothly from the Kubwa, Abuja station at about 6.30pm, Monday evening, and just about an hour into the journey, they heard a loud bang and the train skidded off, almost falling off the track and soon came to a standstill in the middle of nowhere. He said they were in that vulnerable situation for to about 10 pm when troops of the Nigerian Army led by the GOC 1 Division came to their rescue. However, before the arrival of the troops, the terrorists had shot some people and took a number of passenger with them.

“We were in the train for about 2 to 3 hours (up to 10 to10.30pm when the army including the GOC 1 Division came to our rescue. They had killed some and took many with them. They were about shooting more people and taking even more people away when the soldiers arrived with their GOC. They promptly saved the situation in a very professional manner that took the terrorist by surprise”.

“I have to commend the military and especially the GOC for their professional competence in rescuing the rest of us. I am really proud of them for saving our lives and attending to the injured in the such desperate time of need.

“God willing, I will never ever join train for a night journey as they are ill-prepared for such emergencies. Thank God for the Nigerian Army”, he concluded.
