Niger Delta Niger Delta Group Writes Speaker, Warns Against Reappointing Tunji-Ojo as Chairman, House Committee on NDDC

A group known as Concerned Stakeholders of Niger Delta Region has written the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas, to protest any consideration of reappointing Hon Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as the Chairman House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In a strongly worded letter signed by its Chairman, Mr Simeon Okparanta, addressed to the Speaker, the group accused Tunji-Ojo of serving only his personal interest and amassing “humongous wealth” whereas his immediate constituency and the entire Niger Delta region suffer on account of his “ineptitude and corrupt practices”.

The group claimed that Tunji-Ojo’s last four years as Chairman House Committee on NDDC is adjudged as the worst in the history of the NDDC. He is noted to have served only his personal interests and amassing humongous wealth which his third and fourth generation will not be able exhaust, whereas his immediate constituency and the entire Niger Delta Region suffer from his ineptitude and corrupt practices.

According to them, Hon Olatuji-Ojo “notoriously failed in performing his oversight functions and is rather interested in deals that benefits him that runs in hundreds of millions of Dollars in NDDC between 2019 and 2022, for which petitions have been formally raised to anti-corrupt agencies. They therefore prayed the Speaker of “leverage on his the trust and confidence reposed in him to ensure that the gentleman is not re-appointed as the Chairman, House Committee on NDDC.

The letter reads in full:

“We like to first of all congratulate you on your emergence as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Federal House Represenatives. No doubt your emergence is a testament to your hard work and dedication to nation building.

The Concerned Stakeholders of Niger Delta Region is a coalition of people from the nine states of the Niger Delta comprising of business men/women, human rights activists and civil society organizations whose aim is advance the cause for Socio-economic Development of the Niger Delta region and to also identify and bring to public glare, the real cogs in wheel of the progress in the region.

We write to add our voice to that of the good people of Ilaja Parapo Forum who recently urged you not to consider Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for appointment as Chairman House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission.

Hon. Olubunmi ‘s last four years as Chairman House Committee on NDDC is adjudged as the worst in the history of the NDDC. He is noted to have served only his personal interests and amassing humongous wealth which his third and fourth generation will not be able exhaust, whereas his immediate constituency and the entire Niger Delta Region suffer from his ineptitude and corrupt practices.

He notoriously failed in performing his oversight functions and is alleged to be culpable in deals running into hundreds of millions of dollars in NDDC between 2019 and 2022 for which a petition has been formally raised to anti-craft agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.

We therefore urge you, Mr Speaker, to leverage on the trust and confidence reposed in you as an incorruptible man of integrity by appointing any other illustrious son of the region whose credibility is not in doubt.

Thank you in anticipation of your understanding.

Yours faithfully,

Simeon Okparanta Ebikibina Agbebo
