NAF Brings Lifesaving Healthcare to Imo: Over 11,000 Treated, 846 Free Surgeries Conducted

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has concluded a large-scale medical outreach in Mbaise and surrounding communities of Imo State, bringing critical healthcare to thousands of residents and reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Civil-Military Relations (CMR).

In partnership with Nwagwu’s Health Initiative, the programme, which spanned August 2025, provided a total of 11,231 medical consultations and 846 free surgeries, alongside the distribution of vital medical aids to persons living with disabilities.

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, described the intervention as central to the NAF’s philosophy of “putting people first.” He explained that beyond defending Nigeria’s airspace, the Air Force remains committed to alleviating hardship in underserved communities.

“This outreach is a testament to our belief in winning hearts and minds, while bridging the gap between the military and civilians,” Abubakar said.

The wide-ranging medical services included 63 thyroidectomies, 118 gynaecological surgeries, 434 general operations, and 331 eye surgeries, in addition to 9,054 general consultations and 2,177 eye consultations. More than 1,300 eyeglasses, walking aids, and crutches were also donated, restoring mobility and dignity to beneficiaries.

The outreach further featured health education sessions on preventive care, maternal health, and hygiene, aimed at ensuring lasting impact for the communities.

Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola, Chief of Civil-Military Relations, stressed the broader significance of the initiative.

“Every cataract restored, every hernia repaired, every life touched demonstrates that the Nigerian Air Force is more than a fighting force – it is a compassionate partner in nation-building,” Daramola stated.

Similarly, Project Coordinator AVM Uche Nwagwu hailed the seamless collaboration between the NAF and local stakeholders, noting that the smiles of beneficiaries remain the greatest reward of the effort.

The NAF has pledged to sustain and expand such outreach programmes across Nigeria, underscoring that its medical interventions are not only about healthcare delivery but also about building trust, promoting unity, and reinforcing its role as “the People’s Air Force.”
