Soldier First: Brigadier General Sani Ahmed Redefines Troop Welfare with Landmark Projects in Port Harcourt Barracks
The Nigerian Army’s “Soldier First” philosophy has received fresh impetus in Port Harcourt, where Brigadier General Sani Ahmed, Commander of the 6 Division Garrison, has unveiled a series of people-centred projects that place troop welfare at the heart of leadership.
The initiatives, carried out under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, and inaugurated by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, reflect the Army’s commitment to sound administration, discipline, and uncompromising welfare.
At the forefront of these projects are two newly constructed blocks of 10-family Corporal and Below Quarters (CBQs), complemented by the comprehensive remodelling of seven additional CBQs. The new accommodations provide modern, dignified living conditions designed to support soldiers and their families, reinforcing the principle that troop morale begins with a stable home environment.

In a broader effort to strengthen the Barracks community, the Cantonment Office was remodelled into a modern hub for welfare administration and personnel management. The upgraded facility now serves as a focal point for engagement between soldiers, their families, and the command structure, fostering unity and mutual trust.
Brigadier General Ahmed also commissioned an ultra-modern Guard Room built in line with global best practices. The facility underscores the Army’s commitment to discipline administered with fairness and respect for the dignity of its personnel.
Operational readiness was equally enhanced with the establishment of a new Petrol, Oil and Lubricants (POL) dispensing point, designed to reduce refuelling time, improve maintenance efficiency, and guarantee mobility for rapid deployments.
Speaking at the inauguration, Army leadership emphasized that these interventions reflect the vision of the COAS, which places the soldier at the centre of operational effectiveness. By prioritizing welfare, the Nigerian Army seeks to ensure that troops remain resilient, mission-ready, and motivated.
Brigadier General Ahmed’s projects have been hailed as a bold translation of the “Soldier First” creed into tangible reality. His leadership has not only improved living conditions but also strengthened the operational capacity of the Garrison, affirming the inseparable link between troop welfare and combat effectiveness.
