Anambra Govt Restores Calm in Onitsha Main Market After Disturbance, Hands Suspects to Police
The Anambra State Government has confirmed that calm has been restored to the Onitsha Main Market following a disturbance that broke out earlier on Tuesday, 9 September 2025. The swift intervention of the Nigeria Police ensured order was reestablished, with suspects linked to the incident already handed over for prosecution.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the government expressed regret over the death of one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, who was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. Her remains have since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and preservation. Other victims are said to be responding positively to treatment.
Governor Charles Soludo has directed that all medical expenses of the injured be covered, while assuring that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law. “The suspects have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution. The government is committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement read in part.
The Commissioner also disclosed that an investigation into the cause of the disturbance has commenced, with measures being put in place to prevent a recurrence. He assured traders and residents that security operatives are maintaining patrols and surveillance in the area to guarantee lasting peace.
Normal trading activities have since resumed at the Onitsha Main Market, one of the largest commercial hubs in West Africa.
