COAS Commissions Infrastructural Projects at Makurdi Cantonment, Reaffirms Commitment to Troops’ Welfare
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has inaugurated a series of newly completed infrastructural projects at the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Joe Akaahan Cantonment, Makurdi, Benue State, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare and operational readiness of personnel.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, General Oluyede underscored the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving the living and working conditions of its personnel and their families. He stressed that the facilities would not only boost morale but also contribute significantly to operational efficiency within the cantonment.

The projects commissioned include the remodelled Joint Officers’ Mess, Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess, and the Jumpers’ Club, as well as the newly built Regimental Sergeant Major’s residence and transit accommodation for personnel. According to the Army Chief, these facilities were carefully designed to meet both the social and operational needs of troops, thereby strengthening the overall effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.
General Oluyede urged personnel and their families to make judicious use of the facilities while ensuring their maintenance for long-term benefit.
The Benue State Governor, Reverend Father (Dr.) Hyacinth Alia, was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode. The ceremony was also attended by senior military officers, members of the Benue State Executive Council, and heads of security agencies.
As part of the activities, the COAS and the Governor’s representative performed a symbolic tree-planting exercise to commemorate the occasion.
