Operation Delta Safe Strengthens Maritime Security as Defence Headquarters Team Assesses Operational Readiness

The Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) has reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard Nigeria’s critical maritime and oil infrastructure from the threats of crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other criminal activities undermining the nation’s economy.
This commitment was highlighted on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, when the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Administrative Assessment Team, led by Rear Admiral JD Akpan, paid an official visit to the OPDS Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
On arrival, the team was received by the Commander, JTF Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral NM Madugu, who commended the DHQ for its continuous support and oversight. He assured the delegation that OPDS remains focused on its mandate of securing the Niger Delta’s maritime and oil assets while ensuring a safe environment for legitimate socio-economic activities to thrive.

During the visit, component commanders and senior officers of the Task Force delivered detailed intelligence and operational briefings, underscoring the significant strides OPDS has made in curtailing oil theft, dismantling illegal refining sites, and combating other threats within its area of responsibility. The briefings also highlighted collaborative operations with sister security agencies and community stakeholders that have bolstered stability across the region.
Rear Admiral Madugu emphasized that the successes recorded are a testament to the dedication and professionalism of OPDS personnel, as well as the strategic guidance of the Defence Headquarters. He reaffirmed that the leadership of the Task Force is working assiduously to consolidate these gains and sustain momentum against criminal networks in the Niger Delta.
Rear Admiral Akpan, leader of the DHQ team, expressed satisfaction with the level of operational preparedness demonstrated by OPDS and lauded the Task Force for its visible impact in protecting national economic assets. He assured that the Defence Headquarters remains committed to providing the necessary support to enhance OPDS operations.
The visit reflects ongoing efforts by the Defence Headquarters to ensure that the nation’s joint operations remain adequately equipped, strategically aligned, and fully prepared to confront emerging threats in the region.
