DHQ Debunks Coup Rumour, Reaffirms Loyalty to Democratic Order
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and malicious an online publication suggesting that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was connected to an alleged attempted military coup.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ described the report as “entirely baseless and misleading,” insisting that no mention of any coup attempt was ever made in its previous communication.

According to the statement, the cancellation of the Independence Day parade was purely a strategic decision to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a crucial bilateral engagement outside the country, while members of the Armed Forces sustain ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry nationwide.
Brigadier General Gusau clarified that the recent arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation was a routine internal process to enforce discipline and uphold professionalism within the Armed Forces. “An investigative panel has been constituted, and its findings will be made public,” he assured.
The DHQ urged Nigerians to disregard the “falsehood being circulated by purveyors of misinformation and enemies of the nation,” reaffirming the military’s unwavering loyalty to the Constitution and to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Tinubu.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly committed to the unity, safety, and stability of our democracy. The Federal Government, the legislature, and the judiciary are working closely for the peace and progress of the nation. Democracy is forever,” the statement concluded.
