Air Marshal Aneke Leads Strategic US Talks to Fast-Track Delivery of 12 AH-1Z Attack Helicopters for NAF

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has led a high-level engagement in the United States aimed at accelerating the delivery of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in a move expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s air combat capability.
The engagement, a Programme Management Review meeting, was held from 5 to 6 January 2026 in San Diego, California, with senior officials of the United States Government and representatives of Messrs Bell Textron, the helicopter manufacturer.
Discussions focused on fast-tracking production timelines and ensuring timely delivery of the platforms to Nigeria.
Speaking during the meeting, Air Marshal Aneke described the acquisition as a critical capability enhancement aligned with his Command Philosophy of building and sustaining a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready Air Force capable of delivering decisive airpower effects in synergy with surface forces to meet national security objectives.
He commended the United States Government and Bell Textron for their professionalism, transparency, and sustained cooperation throughout the acquisition process, noting that the structured review underscored the NAF’s emphasis on programme discipline, accountability, and results.

“We deeply value the professionalism and openness demonstrated throughout this process, and we remain fully committed to working closely with our partners to ensure the timely and successful delivery of these platforms,” the CAS said.
Air Marshal Aneke further noted that the AH-1Z helicopter programme goes beyond a mere platform upgrade, describing it as a testament to the enduring defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. According to him, the partnership reflects shared values, mutual trust, and a collective commitment to regional and global security.
Reaffirming the NAF’s sense of urgency, the CAS assured the US team that his administration would take all necessary measures to ensure the helicopters are delivered within the shortest possible time.
He also charged the programme management team to remain proactive, innovative, and solutions-driven, while ensuring production is completed on schedule and within budget.
“Timelines and standards must be met concurrently,” he stressed.
The CAS also expressed gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the acquisition would significantly enhance the Service’s combat capability, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.
He explained that the advanced capabilities of the AH-1Z helicopters would enable the NAF to conduct highly precise operations, minimise collateral damage, and provide timely support to ground forces, thereby saving lives and protecting property in affected communities.
Air Marshal Aneke reassured Nigerians of the Air Force’s continued commitment to combating terrorism and other criminal threats with professionalism, restraint, and accountability, while sustaining public trust and confidence in NAF operations.
