Nigeria–U.S. Security Partnership Delivering Results, Says Information Minister
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said the country’s security partnership with the United States is yielding tangible operational gains, describing it as a mature and trust-based strategic relationship anchored on shared values and responsibilities.
Speaking on the sidelines of a bilateral Working Group convening in Abuja on Thursday, Idris noted that the engagement marked the third high-level interaction with senior U.S. government leadership since a Nigerian delegation visited Washington in November 2025.
The meeting followed two U.S. congressional delegations hosted by Nigeria in December 2025, underscoring the growing intensity of diplomatic and security cooperation between both countries.
According to the minister, the bilateral relationship reflects a shared commitment to religious freedom, civilian protection, and transparency, while also demonstrating the depth of trust and candour that now characterise U.S.–Nigeria relations.
He explained that cooperation between the two countries spans military, intelligence, and broader security domains, and has translated into measurable results on the battlefield.
Enhanced intelligence sharing and closer coordination between the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Nigerian Armed Forces, he said, have strengthened operations across multiple theatres, particularly in the North-East under Operation Hadin Kai and Operation Fasan Yamma.

Idris also disclosed that the United States has committed to the timely delivery of outstanding military equipment procured by Nigeria over the past five years. These include drones, helicopters, operational platforms, spare parts, and associated support systems. In addition, Washington has expressed readiness to further assist Nigeria through the provision of surplus defence equipment.
“The partnership is working and yielding tangible gains,” the minister said, assuring Nigerians that ongoing efforts will continue to produce positive outcomes. He urged the public to remain patient and supportive as security operations are sustained.
On Nigeria’s domestic efforts, Idris highlighted decisive steps taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address insecurity.
These include the formal declaration of national security emergencies in vulnerable and high-risk areas, the authorization of intensified joint security operations, and the sustained deployment of security forces to priority locations nationwide.
He added that the Federal Government is strengthening early-warning mechanisms and developing a national database to serve as a single, authoritative source of accurate and verifiable data on deaths and casualties arising from violence.
The initiative, he said, is aimed at improving evidence-based decision-making, enhancing accountability, and ensuring more effective security responses.
Furthermore, the minister said the Federal Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, is intensifying efforts to investigate and prosecute terrorism-related cases.
“Our objective is clear,” Idris stated. “Violence must be met not only with force, but also with justice and accountability.”
He expressed confidence that sustained international cooperation and robust domestic reforms would continue to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and contribute to lasting peace and stability.
