Coup Plot: AFN Concludes Investigation of 16 Officers, Sets Stage for Military Trial
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has concluded investigations into disciplinary cases involving sixteen officers earlier arrested for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, the Defence Headquarters has announced.
In an update released on Tuesday, the military confirmed that the investigation report has been completed and forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations and established military procedures.
It will be recalled that the Defence Headquarters, in October 2025, announced the arrest of the officers following allegations of conduct deemed inconsistent with military ethics and service regulations.
According to the latest statement, the comprehensive investigation carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the actions of the affected personnel.

The findings, the AFN disclosed, identified a number of the officers as having allegations to answer, including claims of plotting to overthrow the government—acts described as incompatible with the values, professionalism, and loyalty expected of members of the Armed Forces.
Consequently, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. The military emphasized that the process would be guided by the principles of fairness, accountability, and due process.
The Armed Forces stressed that the measures being taken are strictly disciplinary in nature and form part of its internal mechanisms to maintain order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
Reaffirming its commitment to constitutional authority, the AFN stated that it remains resolute in upholding the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for democratic governance.
