Fake News Undermines Counter-Terrorism Efforts, Says Theatre Commander Abubakar
The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has raised concerns over the rising tide of fake news and misinformation, particularly as it relates to military operations in Nigeria.
Speaking with Security Digest at the Theatre Headquarters in Maiduguri, the Commander acknowledged that while security challenges are a global phenomenon, the distinguishing factor lies in how nations shape the narrative surrounding such crises, noting that this is a critical component of national security.
He emphasised the need for media practitioners and information managers in Nigeria to be deliberate and responsible in disseminating accurate information. According to him, “the role of the media is crucial in asymmetric warfare; however, a few individuals continue to inadvertently provide oxygen to terrorists through the narratives they promote.”

Major General Abubakar also criticised the activities of some self-styled citizen journalists, accusing them of spreading fake news and misinformation that are not only counterproductive but also distract from ongoing efforts to combat terrorism.
Citing a recent viral report on social media alleging poor feeding of troops, the Theatre Commander described the claim as entirely false and a misrepresentation of the situation on ground. He maintained that personnel of Operation Hadin Kai do not face challenges regarding feeding.
He further disclosed that the operation places high priority on troop welfare, including the establishment of a “Food Committee” tasked with monitoring and supervising the quality and distribution of meals across the theatre.
The Commander stressed that he holds field commanders accountable for the welfare of their troops, particularly on issues relating to feeding. “Commanders who cannot take care of their troops risk losing their command,” he stated.
He reiterated that reports circulating on social media about inadequate troop welfare do not reflect the reality within Operation Hadin Kai, urging the public to rely on verified information and responsible journalism.
