How Troops Foiled IPOB/ESN Attack in Enugu, Recover Explosives and Arrest Suspect
Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have foiled an attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intelligence-led operation in Imezi Owa Community, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The operation, conducted on May 6, 2026, was reportedly a follow-up mission aimed at tracking suspected terrorist collaborators operating within the community.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, troops advancing on foot into the community came under heavy attack from a building believed to have been used as a terrorist hideout.
The military disclosed that three personnel sustained injuries during the encounter. However, the troops maintained operational superiority, successfully repelled the attackers and secured the area. The wounded soldiers were immediately evacuated to a military medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment.

In the course of the firefight, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly stockpiled inside the terrorists’ hideout detonated, sparking a fire outbreak that razed the building.
Security forces subsequently conducted exploitation operations around the area and recovered additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades, as well as a shrine reportedly used for ritual activities by the criminal elements. The shrine was later destroyed to prevent its continued use for unlawful activities and to ensure the safety of residents in the area.
The military further revealed that one suspected collaborator was apprehended during the operation. The suspect, alongside recovered items, has been handed over to the Nigerian Police, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Operation UDO KA reassured residents of Imezi Owa and surrounding communities of the commitment of security agencies to safeguarding lives and property through professionally conducted operations.
The Joint Task Force urged law-abiding citizens to remain calm, avoid harbouring criminal elements and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
The military also warned members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN and their sympathisers to desist from acts of violence and criminality or face decisive action, stressing that security forces remain determined to dismantle terrorist networks and restore lasting peace and stability across the South East region.
