Edo Special Security Squad Storms Criminal Hideouts, Arrests Over 20 Suspects in Benin
— Operation Targets Cult Leaders, Kidnappers, Drug Syndicates in Statewide Crackdown
The Special Security Squad set up by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has launched its first major operation in Benin City, leading to the arrest of over 20 suspected cultists, kidnappers, and drug peddlers.
The security operation, codenamed “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists”, was carried out on Tuesday, July 15, targeting criminal hotspots across Isiohor, Iguosa, Oluku, Ibiwe/Lagos Street, and other notorious enclaves within the capital city.
According to officials of the squad, the operation uncovered a cache of weapons, hard drugs, and other incriminating items during the coordinated raids. The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation.
A member of the Special Security Squad, John Adewale Eseikhaigbe, while addressing the media after the raids, commended Governor Okpebholo for taking bold action to restore peace and security in the state.
“Thanks to the Governor for his unwavering commitment to peace and safety. The Governor made it clear that the recent spate of killings must end — and this Squad is his response,” he said. “Our first operation has shown results, and we will not relent. This is just the beginning of our efforts to rid Edo of criminal elements.”
Eseikhaigbe emphasized that the operation extended beyond cult-related activity, targeting interconnected crimes including kidnapping, drug trafficking, and armed robbery.

“Many of these crimes are linked. To clean up the streets, we’re going after all of them — cultists, drug dealers, kidnappers — and we’ll ensure Edo State becomes a safe haven for both residents and investors,” he added.
Also speaking, Eribo Emwanta, another squad member, clarified that the recent sealing of a hotel in Isiohor during the operation was based on intelligence reports and not an act of persecution.
“That hotel was allegedly being used as a hideout for drug peddlers and suspected cultists. Our action is based on security reports. The owner has been invited for questioning. This is not witch-hunting; it’s about protecting lives and restoring law and order,” he explained.
Amielemen Idemudia Noah, also a member of the team, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the visible presence and swift action of the Squad reflects the Governor’s determination to restore Edo’s image and public confidence.
“The killings and insecurity are not only hurting our people, but also the reputation of the State. We commend the Governor for leading this charge. The Squad is committed to a safer Edo for everyone,” he said.
The Special Squad, which comprises personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as well as hunters, vigilante groups, and even repentant cultists, represents a robust multi-agency and community-based approach to tackling crime in the state.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward criminality and has vowed that the momentum will be sustained until every street, community, and local government in Edo State is free from the grip of violent gangs.
