Operation Delta Safe: Sustaining Security and Safeguarding Nigeria’s Economic Lifeline

The task of protecting Nigeria’s vast oil and maritime assets is no small feat. In the heart of the Niger Delta, where illegal bunkering, oil theft, piracy, and other maritime crimes have historically threatened the nation’s economic lifeline, the Joint Task Force South South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), continues to stand as a bulwark against threats to national security and prosperity.
On Wednesday, 27 August 2025, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Administrative Assessment Team, led by Rear Admiral JD Akpan, visited the Headquarters of OPDS in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The visit was not only routine but also a resounding endorsement of the Task Force’s operational readiness, professionalism, and the positive results it has consistently achieved under its present leadership.
Commendation for a Job Well Done
During the visit, the DHQ delegation was received by the Commander, OPDS, Rear Admiral NM Madugu, who has been at the forefront of galvanizing his officers and men towards the full realization of the Task Force’s mandate.
The team also engaged in discussions with component commanders and senior officers before receiving comprehensive intelligence and operational briefings.
The briefings painted a vivid picture of the determined efforts of OPDS troops in combating oil theft, dismantling illegal refining sites, curbing piracy, and ensuring safe waterways for legitimate economic activities.
The visiting team expressed satisfaction with the conduct, professionalism, and resilience of the troops, acknowledging the clear successes already recorded in an operational environment as complex as the Niger Delta.
