APC Brokers Unity in Borno Ahead of 2027 Polls as Lawan Steps Down Guber Ambition in Support of Gubio
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno State has recorded a major political breakthrough following a high-level reconciliation meeting led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, paving the way for a unified front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a move described as a sacrifice for party cohesion, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan has withdrawn his gubernatorial ambition, endorsing the emergence of Engineer Mustapha Gubio as the party’s consensus candidate for the Borno governorship race.
The decision was reached after extensive deliberations at a closed-door meeting chaired by Vice President Shettima on Thursday night. The meeting brought together key political stakeholders in the state, including Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, former Governor Maina Ma’aji Lawan, Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, and APC Deputy National Chairman Ali Bukar Dalori.

Also in attendance were prominent federal lawmakers such as Senators Mohammed Tahir Monguno and Mohammed Ali Ndume, alongside Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari and other influential party figures.
Party insiders say the resolution underscores a deliberate effort to preserve unity, strengthen internal cohesion, and ensure political stability within the APC in Borno State.
Addressing his supporters, Senator Lawan urged calm and loyalty to the party’s collective decision, calling on them to “eschew bitterness” and rally behind the consensus arrangement. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue representing Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
As part of the reconciliation process, supporters have been invited to a grand reception scheduled for Friday in Maiduguri. The event will be led by Governor Zulum and feature the presentation of APC candidates and key political stakeholders, symbolizing what party leaders describe as a renewed mandate for peace, unity, and development in the state.
The development is seen as a strategic consolidation of APC ranks in Borno, a critical stronghold, as the party positions itself for a competitive outing in the 2027 general elections.
