No Single Service Can Win Nigeria’s Security War, CAS Declares, Calls for Intelligence-Driven Joint Operations
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal SK Aneke, has declared that Nigeria’s increasingly complex security challenges can only be effectively addressed through intelligence-led operations, integrated military cooperation and the strategic application of air power, insisting that no single security service possesses the capacity to secure the nation in isolation.
Air Marshal Aneke made the declaration on Friday while delivering a lecture titled “Air Power and National Security: The Nigerian Air Force in Perspective” to participants of National Defence College Course 34 at the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja.
Addressing an audience comprising senior officers of the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, participants from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as 20 international participants from allied countries, the CAS stressed that the changing character of modern warfare demands stronger synergy among security institutions and a whole-of-government approach to national security.
He observed that Nigeria’s security environment has evolved beyond conventional warfare, with terrorists, bandits, separatist groups and transnational criminal organisations increasingly exploiting emerging technologies, difficult terrain and civilian populations to evade security forces.
According to him, countering these sophisticated threats requires seamless intelligence fusion across air, land, maritime, cyber and human domains to provide a comprehensive operational picture capable of supporting timely and decisive military action.
Describing air power as a strategic enabler of national security, the CAS highlighted its unique ability to provide speed, precision, flexibility and extended reach for intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, rapid force deployment, border security, maritime protection and precision strikes while minimising civilian casualties.

Air Marshal Aneke emphasised that the effectiveness of air power is significantly enhanced when integrated with ground and maritime operations.

He maintained that sustained operational success depends on robust intelligence sharing, coordinated planning and synchronised execution across all operational domains.
The Air Chief also warned that emerging threats such as cyber warfare, unmanned aerial systems, piracy, arms trafficking, information warfare and the deliberate use of social media to spread disinformation are reshaping Nigeria’s security landscape.
He cautioned that hostile actors increasingly exploit cyberspace to deepen societal divisions and undermine public confidence in state institutions, making cyber resilience and strategic communication indispensable components of national security.
Reflecting on the Nigerian Air Force’s six decades of operational experience, Air Marshal Aneke said the Service has continued to strengthen its capabilities through indigenous innovation, force modernisation, advanced intelligence systems, logistics resilience and strategic partnerships.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to sustaining decisive air power through technological advancement and indigenous capacity development to support Nigeria’s national security objectives.
The CAS further noted that national security extends beyond protecting territorial integrity to safeguarding democratic institutions, critical national infrastructure, economic prosperity and the overall well-being of Nigerians.
He urged participants of the National Defence College, whom he described as future strategic leaders, to champion innovation, jointness and inter-agency collaboration as essential pillars for overcoming the country’s evolving security challenges.
The lecture further underscored the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to promoting strategic thought leadership, strengthening joint military cooperation and leveraging air power as a force multiplier in advancing Nigeria’s national security, regional stability and international peace support operations.
