Tinubu Approves Up to 80% Salary Increase for Armed Forces Personnel
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening the country’s security architecture.
The salary adjustment, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Under the new remuneration package, officers from the rank of Brigadier General to General will receive a 30 per cent salary increase, while officers from Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase.
The highest adjustment is reserved for personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant, who will receive an 80 per cent salary increase.
The Federal Government said the revised salary structure would raise the annual personnel cost of the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.
President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s appreciation of the sacrifices made daily by members of the Armed Forces in confronting terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare while continuing the ongoing modernisation of the Armed Forces through the acquisition of advanced weapons systems and technological capabilities to enhance operational effectiveness.
According to the President, security remains a fundamental pillar of national development, stressing that no country can attain sustainable growth without guaranteeing the safety of lives and property.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said.
President Tinubu also urged members of the Armed Forces to view the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s gratitude for their patriotism and dedication to duty.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
The latest salary review comes amid sustained military operations across various theatres in the North-East, North-West, North-Central and South-East, where troops continue to combat terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The approval is expected to boost morale among personnel while complementing ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to enhance the operational capability and welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
