COAS Unveils New Army Medical Corps Headquarters, Reaffirms Commitment to Troops’ Welfare

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families, identifying access to quality healthcare as a critical factor in troop morale, operational readiness and overall military effectiveness.

Shaibu stated this on Thursday while unveiling the newly constructed Headquarters of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja.

He charged the Corps to sustain efforts towards improving healthcare delivery to military personnel, their families and members of barracks communities, stressing that the well-being of soldiers remains central to building a motivated and combat-ready force.

According to the COAS, investment in comprehensive healthcare goes beyond the treatment of illnesses, as the physical well-being of personnel and their families directly influences their morale, confidence and effectiveness in the discharge of military duties.

He noted that providing responsive and accessible medical services would reassure soldiers that the Nigerian Army prioritises their welfare and that of their loved ones, thereby strengthening their commitment to assigned operational responsibilities.

Shaibu commended the Nigerian Army Medical Corps for its contributions to military operations, routine healthcare delivery and humanitarian interventions across the country.

He described the newly constructed headquarters as an important addition to the Army’s medical infrastructure, noting that the facility would enhance administrative coordination, improve healthcare delivery and provide a more conducive working environment for the Corps.

The Army Chief urged the Corps to maximise the opportunities offered by the new facility to promote innovation, professionalism and efficiency in medical services.

He said these priorities were consistent with his Command Philosophy of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which places personnel welfare at the centre of military leadership.

Earlier, the Corps Commander Medical, Brigadier General Innocent Ewunchola, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his leadership and sustained investment in medical infrastructure.

Ewunchola assured that the Corps would remain committed to providing efficient, accessible and quality healthcare to all eligible beneficiaries.

He also pledged that the facility would be properly maintained and effectively utilised to advance the Corps’ mandate of delivering medical support to Nigerian Army personnel and other eligible beneficiaries.

The unveiling underscores the Army leadership’s emphasis on strengthening medical infrastructure as part of broader efforts to improve personnel welfare, sustain operational effectiveness and enhance the institution’s capacity to meet the healthcare needs of its workforce.
