IGBOKODA AIR CRASH: NAF Recovers Intact Cockpit Voice Recorder as Search Continues

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the wreckage of its ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery operations and investigations into the accident continue.

The Air Force disclosed that the recorder had been confirmed intact by technical teams from the NAF and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), marking a significant breakthrough in efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In a statement on Friday, 6 November, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, also confirmed the recovery of part of the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly known as the black box, while efforts were ongoing to locate and retrieve the remaining portion.

The ongoing recovery operation has also yielded additional aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains, with technical teams continuing to work in the challenging swamp terrain to retrieve outstanding components for detailed examination.

According to the statement, the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the NSIB, with emphasis on due diligence and evidence-based findings.

The Air Force further disclosed that the Directorate of Identification and Classification (DIC) was handling procedures for the proper identification of recovered human remains.

It added that sustained engagements were being maintained with families of the victims to provide necessary information and support, while discussions with relevant authorities over environmental concerns raised by the host community remained part of the broader response.

The NAF appealed for public patience and understanding, noting that the recovery and investigative processes require time, careful coordination and professional attention.

It reiterated that the ultimate objective was not only to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident but also to draw critical lessons that would strengthen flight safety, improve air operations and safeguard the lives of military personnel and citizens.

The Air Force assured the public of its commitment to providing verified updates as the recovery operation and investigation progress.
