NAF Intensifies Crash Recovery at Igbokoda as Water Level Drops on Day 14

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified recovery operations at the site of its crashed ATR 42-500 aircraft, NAF 931, in Igbokoda, Ondo State, with water levels dropping significantly as the operation entered its 14th day on Monday, October 19, 2026.

The Service said continuous pumping had substantially reduced the volume of water at the site, with recovery personnel working towards removing most of the remaining water, subject to prevailing conditions.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NAF disclosed that efforts were also underway to reinforce the embankment with sandbags to prevent a possible collapse and maintain structural stability as dewatering operations continued.

The ongoing recovery mission involves sustained engineering interventions under challenging conditions, highlighting the scale and complexity of the operation.

The NAF commended the dedication and professionalism of the recovery personnel and partner agencies involved in the exercise, with particular appreciation to Hitech Construction Company for its support.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, also praised the recovery team for its resilience and commitment, reiterating the Service’s determination to complete the operation safely and methodically.

According to the statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the recovery effort is being conducted alongside the ongoing aircraft accident investigation.

The Service emphasised that safety considerations and prevailing site conditions remained central to the operation, which requires sustained engineering and dewatering efforts before further recovery activities can be undertaken.

The NAF also expressed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives in the crash, acknowledging the pain and anguish they continue to endure.

It reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining recovery operations and providing timely, verified updates as work progresses.

The Service further appreciated the patience and cooperation of the Igbokoda community, as well as the continued support of stakeholders contributing to the recovery mission.
