DHQ Clarifies Identity of Neutralised Terrorist Commander Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki
The Defence Headquarters has clarified concerns surrounding the recent neutralisation of notorious terrorist commander Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, following public debate triggered by reports of a similarly named insurgent reportedly killed in an earlier military operation in 2024.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters said there was no ambiguity regarding the identity of the terrorist eliminated during the joint operation conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States Africa Command on May 16, 2026.
According to the statement, the recurrence of similar names, aliases and nom de guerres among fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram is a common phenomenon across the North East and the wider Lake Chad Basin.
The DHQ explained that terrorist groups deliberately adopt identical or closely related aliases as part of their indoctrination process and operational concealment strategy aimed at obscuring identities and frustrating intelligence tracking efforts.

“It is important to state that within the North East region and across the Lake Chad Basin, the use of similar or identical names, aliases and nom de guerres is common among ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists,” the statement noted.
The military further disclosed that the Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki killed during the latest operation had been positively identified through a combination of human intelligence and technical surveillance.
According to the DHQ, the terrorist commander was a senior global operative within the Islamic State network, maintaining direct links to international terrorist coordination, funding and operations across the Sahel region.
The Defence Headquarters described the operation as a major breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, reaffirming the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States to dismantling terrorist networks operating within the region.
The military also urged the media and members of the public to rely strictly on official channels for verified information in order to avoid confusion arising from coincidental similarities in terrorist aliases and identities.
The clarification follows growing discussions in sections of the media over reports that another terrorist commander bearing the name Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki had earlier been eliminated during a previous military operation in 2024.
