United States-Nigeria Counterterrorism Alliance Deepens as Joint Operation Eliminates Senior ISIS Leader
The growing strategic partnership between the United States and Nigeria in the global war against terrorism recorded a major breakthrough following the successful elimination of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a senior commander of the Islamic State terrorist network, during a coordinated joint operation involving American and Nigerian forces.
The operation, described by U.S. President Donald Trump as “meticulously planned and highly complex,” underscores the increasing level of intelligence-sharing, operational coordination and military cooperation between both countries in confronting transnational terrorist threats operating across Africa and beyond.
In a statement issued on Friday, Trump disclosed that American special operations forces worked closely with the Nigerian Armed Forces to neutralize al-Minuki, who was identified as the second-in-command within the global ISIS structure and one of the world’s most active terrorist operatives.
According to him, the terrorist leader had been operating from Africa and played a key role in coordinating extremist activities linked to the Islamic State network.

“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” Trump stated.
Security analysts view the development as another indication of the evolving security relationship between Washington and Abuja, particularly in the area of counterterrorism operations, intelligence fusion and regional stabilization efforts across the Lake Chad Basin and the wider West African sub-region.
The successful operation also reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s military capabilities and its expanding role as a frontline partner in the global campaign against terrorism.
Trump noted that the operation was made possible through coordinated intelligence efforts that tracked the movements and activities of the ISIS commander over time.
“With his removal, ISIS’s global operation is greatly diminished. Thank you to the Government of Nigeria for your partnership on this operation,” he added.
Although authorities in both countries have yet to disclose the precise location or operational details of the mission, the development is already being regarded as one of the most significant joint counterterrorism successes involving U.S. and Nigerian forces in recent years.
The latest collaboration comes amid intensified efforts by Nigerian security forces to degrade terrorist networks linked to ISIS and other extremist organizations operating within the region, while also strengthening bilateral security ties with international allies committed to combating global terrorism.
