Nigeria, Niger Deepen Military Cooperation to Curb Border Banditry

The enhanced military cooperation with the Republic of Niger has significantly strengthened security along the two countries’ shared border, disrupting bandit operations and limiting the movement of transnational criminal groups.

Commander of the 17 Brigade, Brigadier General M.I. Ibrahim, said the partnership has improved intelligence sharing, coordinated border patrols and joint operations, making it increasingly difficult for armed groups to exploit the porous frontier as a sanctuary.

Speaking on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of Defence Correspondents at the Brigade Headquarters in Katsina, Ibrahim described the bilateral relationship as a key component of ongoing efforts to combat banditry and other cross-border crimes.

“Bandits have long taken advantage of the vast forests and difficult terrain along the border to evade security operations,” he said. “Today, enhanced collaboration between both armed forces has greatly restricted their freedom of movement.”

He said the improved operational synergy had boosted surveillance and rapid response capabilities, adding that no cross-border security incidents had been recorded within the Brigade’s area of responsibility in the past six months.

“We have not recorded any incidents within the borders in the last six months,” Ibrahim said.

The Brigade Commander said military operations alone would not eliminate banditry, stressing that lasting peace requires coordinated efforts involving security agencies, intelligence services, government institutions, traditional leaders and local communities.

He said the objective of ongoing operations is to create a secure environment that allows displaced residents to return home safely, resume farming and rebuild their livelihoods.

Ibrahim reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to sustained offensive operations against criminal groups across Katsina State, including those responsible for the abduction of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe.

Security experts have long argued that tackling insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West requires stronger regional cooperation, as many armed groups operate across international borders and exploit shared forests and difficult terrain.

Military authorities say continued cooperation between Nigeria and Niger, backed by intelligence sharing and community support, will further weaken cross-border criminal networks and consolidate recent security gains.
